Celebrating Our First Year

October 29, 2009

by: MG Keith L. Thurgood

MG_Thurgood As Commander of AAFES, I’m proud that we’ve been a part of your Military community for over a century. To those outside the military we may appear to be just another retail store but I hope we’ve resonated with you to be much more than that.

We have a rich history of supporting Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines and military families no matter where you’re called to serve. I’m sure you’ve heard the motto… “We Go Where You Go.” The mission is two-fold: provide quality merchandise and services to customers at competitively low prices & generate earnings which provide a dividend to support morale, welfare, and recreation programs. In fact, roughly two-thirds of AAFES’ earnings are paid to Services and MWR programs to spend on quality of life improvements, including youth services, Armed Forces Recreation Centers, arts and crafts, aquatic centers, post functions and golf courses. In addition to funding Services/MWR programs, AAFES earnings are used to build new stores, like the newest and largest stores at KMCC and Kadena.

We’re also pleased to provide information and entertainment to our Military members.   More than that, we want to hear what you have to say.  I hope you all have enjoyed this blog over the last year and continue to enjoy our postings. It’s important for our organization to remain available and engaged with our customers, wherever you are. Tell us what you’re thinking on this blog as we start our second year of it together.

The scavenger hunt that’s been posted for the last week is complete. I’m proud to announce the first person to send in all the correct answers. And the winner is (drum roll please)…Donna Schwartz. Great job! You are the lucky winner of the AAFES $50 gift card and will be contacted soon. And thanks to all that participated.
