Do you have a collection of old electronics that you don’t know what to do with? Even worse, have you been discarding your unwanted gadgets in your garbage? Remember some TVs and electronic devices may contain lead, chromium, and other toxic materials, which may cause serious problems when not disposed of properly. Instead of just tossing your old equipment, consider these more earth friendly alternatives:
- Donation: When considering donation, ensure the device is still in proper working order. If so, it is likely a local charity, church or school may need such items. Donating unused electronics is a benefit to society because these organizations or economically disadvantaged citizens in your community could not otherwise afford the equipment. It also helps improve the environment by extending the life of the product and keeping it out of the waste system.
- Recycle: Reduce the pollution that would have been generated while manufacturing a new product, and support the recovery and reuse of valuable materials. Many electronics manufacturers are now accepting used electronics for recycling. Authorized shoppers can also visit militaryrecycling.com, where you can get rewarded for recycling your outdated electronics.
To get more information or locate a recycling center near you, visit www.epa.gov. In the quick finder section, click on “Wastes.” Then select Electronics Recycling (eCycling) in the Recycling/Pollution Prevention section.
