As Lauren and I both alluded to in previous posts, AAFES employees voluntarily deploy downrange to provide support to the brave Military Service members there. As a result of their patronage, sixteen AAFES employees were honored in Mannheim Main Exchange with the Global War on Terrorism civil service medal (GWOT) on February 4. There are specific guidelines and limitations on eligibility for the award. According to the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army,
The GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM (GWOT) medal is established to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of the civilian workforce of the Department of Defense in direct support of the armed forces, whose members are engaged in operations to combat terrorism in all forms throughout the world.

A Tactical Field Exchange (TFE) is in a nutshell, a mini BX/PX on wheels. They provide basic health, hygiene and personal care needs in areas of deployment and other remote locations. Many tactical field exchanges are run by AAFES associates that advocate the AAFES mission, ‘We Go Where You Go,’ on a volunteer basis. AAFES also supports TFEs that are operated by the Military in locations where AAFES is not allowed.Tactical field exchanges were developed in Vietnam from the principle of the mobile units used in the Korean conflict. AAFES was the first organization on the ground to “Bring a taste of Home” to troops in the wake of OEF/OIF. TFEs are not only deployed to warzones though. They have also provided assistance to areas of natural disaster, such as the victims of Hurricane Katrina. And after the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, AAFES delivered much needed relief to the rescue operations at the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Feel free to view and share TFE experiences with AAFES and others.
